LIGOWSKY
CLAY TARGET
The very first clay
target, which measured 4 1/4 inches across, were developed by
George Ligowsky of Cincinnati, Ohio in 1880. He also developed
a trap machine to throw these targets. His inventions spawned
a multitude of machines and targets during the following 10-15
years. Following on the heels of his target came the Peoria
Black, the American Target, the Keystone Target, the Bat, the Dickey Bird and the Black Pigeon and
a host of others.
They were made of finely ground
clay mixed with water and baked, were very hard, ringing like
a bell when hit. They were introduced after the NY State Shoot
in 1880 and were quit a hit. He hired Doc Carver and Adam
Bogardus to promote his target. Target would cost about $75.00
