SUMMARY: At age 22, Ezekiel Hamilton, a native of Ireland, emigrated from Ireland to the United States in May of 1841. He arrived at the port of Philadelphia on July 1, 1841. He applied for US citizenship on October 8, 1851 and was granted citizenship in October of 1856 after a mandatory 5 year waiting period.

My paternal great grandfather. His sixth child, Pennock Fred Hamilton, is my paternal grandfather. Ezekiel was a Chester County farmer. He was born in 1819 in Ireland. He and his wife Lydia Pennock Hamilton had 7 children. He must have been well off to own his own land at the age of 31. The census of 1850 gave his occupation as a farmer and the value of his real estate was $2,000.00. Living with him in 1850 were his wife Lydia Pennock Hamilton and their two year old daughter, May Jane Hamilton. He must have been fairly well off when he immigrated from Ireland. Many Irish immigrants were laborers and could not read or write. Ezekiel could read and write, according to the census. The census also confirms that he was born in Ireland. He is buried at West Grove Friends Meeting, West Grove, PA.
